Art Kintsugi Sydney will be coming to the city of Auckland! We are taking an expression of interest during the month of July/August 2025. If you are an individual or a group, please let us know your preferred dates, number, and any questions.Available dates: July : 12th (Sat), 13th (Sun), 19th (Sat), 20th (Sun) August : 23th (Sat), 24th (Sun), 30th (Sat), 31th (Sun) In this four hour, step-by-step hands-on workshop, you will learn the Art Kintsugi method, following the principle of ancient Kintsugi but utilising more accessible alternative materials which enable us to complete the process within the class.During the class, we will also talk about a brief history and philosophy of Kintsugi.What is Kintsugi?Kintsugi is the century-old Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with Japanese lacquer (Urushi) dusted with powdered gold giving a new life to when otherwise items would be thrown away. In recent years, this craftsmanship has been regarded as an important traditional art to influence on Modern art around the world.PhilosophyKintsugi expresses Wabi-Sabi philosophy, an embracing of imperfection, whilst appreciating the artefact’s history and personal memories. Instead of disguising the damages and bringing them to the original state, Kintsugi emphasises the defects with gold, symbolising life.At the end of the relaxing class, you will take home a Kintsugi art piece you create and a skill to be able to repair your own damaged ceramics at home.Please note:
This workshop is not suitable for a pregnant person.
We will be using alternative materials such as resin and gold metal powder (not 24k gold).
A small piece of ceramic suitable for the class will be prepared for you.
Yoko Kawada Designer/maker of homeware products including tile art of SQUARE+ROUND Basin, MONO Tray and collaboration work of Kintsugi with international artists and artisan. I studied interior design in London late 1990 and established solo trade business as Yoko Kawada in 2016. My design is influenced by multiple countries I have been in the past searching materials and creative process both in traditional way and with technology. I started to practice Kintsugi a few years ago in Japan to incorporate its unique nature of the Japanese traditional craft into my design. I run Kintsugi workshops to share the joy of learning this Japanese craft full of surprises and contradictions.
