Class overview:
  • There will be a visual presentation showing finished results of gilding and various examples of gilding to various objects including filmsets, pulled from Robert's personal portfolio.
  • There will be completed objects he will use to showcase 'Dutch' and 'Genuine' leaf applications.
  • You will then be presented with all the materials and tools you would need to Gild with. Every tool will be explained in terms of its purpose. Included in the materials will be oil and water-borne sizes; their purpose and drying times.
  • The different types of gilding papers will be shown to you in order for you to appreciate the diversity of gilding papers, including how 'Dutch' leaf and 'Genuine' leaf differs to one another and their applicational uses.
You will learn:
  • How to prepare the work area for Gilding
  • Surface Preparation
  • Gold size application (For the sake of time, we shall be using a water-borne size method)
  • How to apply the gold/silver gold leaf correctly
  • How to manage gild leaf mess and recycling method
  • Sealing and protecting the Gilding
You will begin the gilding process. During this process, Robert will be walking around the class, helping to make sure every process is correctly done.
Gilding process:
  • Start preparing your object's surface for gilding
  • Remove all dust with a 'tack cloth'
  • Begin applying the size
  • Check to see if all areas are covered with size
  • Check size for the correct tackiness needed to begin applying the gild papers
  • Begin applying the gild papers
  • 'Spot in' any areas that are not covered by gild paper
  • Brush off any overlapping gild papers
  • Carefully apply sealing/protective lacquer to the gilded surface
  • Check if the entire object has been sealed and protected
  • Leave lacquer to set dry
The main thing is to not worry but enjoy the process!
Do not worry if there are un-gilded spots due to an area that's dried before you could gild it or you simply missed it. The water-borne size you will use can easily be applied over a dried size area and leaf applied over that. Tiny patch-up' can happen even with professionals!
By the end of the class, you can showcase your gilded objects to one another to admire each other's achievements!
What you'll get
You will have a gilded decorative object to take home.
Knowledge required
As this is a 'Dutch leaf' gilding class, you do not need any high level skill for the application process, just a little patience!
What to bring

I don't talk much about myself normally but this is the type of arts and crafts I have worked on for over 30 years
I worked as a decorative artist for many well known stately homes producing specialist finishes such as murals, gilding, colour washing, wood graining, marbling, decorative plasterworks and restoration works.
Later I got into television and went into model making, props creation, fabrication and physical efffects such as explosions and pyrotechnics and snow creation.
Later got into the film industry, creating filmset props, models, filmset miniatures, weapons and vehicles.
I worked in all major studios, working on films such as Star wars Rogue One, Bladerunner 2049, Charlie and the Chocolate factory, Beauty and the Beast, Ready Player One, Stardust, Robin Hood and many others.
On Beauty and the Beast, I taught and trained up 11 film students for 7 months. 9 were women. I have been told they are presently, some of the most respected technicians in the Film Industry today.
I have taught many other post graduate artists in film craft techniques and also invented some of the paint sytems, for example, that are still in place today in the film industry.
