Their workshops are designed to be both educational and engaging, helping you gain a clear understanding of what’s involved and whether beekeeping is a good fit for you.
Class overview:
  • Begin by suiting up in full protective gear and gaining a clear understanding of how to stay safe around bees, including how to manage and respond to stings.
  • Learn about the essential biosecurity practices and legal requirements every beekeeper must follow to protect bee populations and maintain healthy hives.
  • Get hands-on experience with the essential tools of beekeeping, including smokers, hive tools, and the different components of a beehive.
  • Open a functioning beehive under expert guidance, observe the inner workings of the colony, explore the honeycomb, and learn how to identify the queen.
  • Discover the fascinating life cycle of honeybees up close, gaining insight into the roles of worker bees, drones, and the queen, as well as the stages of development from egg to adult.

Earthbound Honey was established in 2006 by Terry and Karlene Shaw-Toomey. Wanting a better life for their three boys, Terry left his job as Production Director for a city-based communications company and started working with the bees. A year later Karlene reduced her workload as a landscape gardener and joined him. They now both work from their 11 acre property in the beautiful Bethells Valley, lying north-west of Auckland.
